About the Chevrolet Silverado
The Chevrolet Silverado is a lineup of trucks produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. First introduced for the 1999 model year, it replaced the long-running Chevrolet C/K series. The name comes from the top trim level used across the C/K range. Today, the Silverado is sold as a range of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the Silverado line debuted for the 2019 model year.
Mechanically, the Silverado shares a lot with the GMC Sierra. GMC moved on from the C/K naming one model generation earlier than Chevrolet. In Mexico, heavy-duty versions of the Silverado may use the name Chevrolet Cheyenne.
Competing with models like the Ford F-Series, Dodge Ram, Nissan Titan, and Toyota Tundra, the Silverado is one of the best-selling vehicles in the United States—selling close to 12 million units since its introduction.
The Silverado nameplate first appeared for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim across all Chevrolet C/K trucks, positioned above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. Around the same time, GMC C/K trucks used Sierra-related naming variations (including Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Today, Chevrolet still uses CK and CC within its current model codes.
For the 1988 GMT400 architecture, Chevrolet kept the C/K naming, while GMC labeled its full-size line as Sierras. Even though the chassis and body design are related, the model histories differ—Sierra has five generations, while the Chevrolet Silverado has four.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, IN, Chevrolet introduced its first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the lineup with 4500, 5500, and 6500 chassis cab models. This medium-duty Silverado is exclusive to Chevrolet, with no planned equivalent from GMC.

The GMT800 Silverado/Sierra 1500 and 2500 pickups arrived in August 1998 as 1999 models. Classic GMT400 light-duty trucks continued production alongside the new designs for that first year. Heavy-duty GMT400 pickups (and GMT400 SUVs) stayed in production until 2000, and the GMT800 Silverado/Sierra HD was released the following year. A small refresh for 2003 models was introduced in 2002, including slight design updates plus improvements to the audio and HVAC controls. Later GMT800 production in 2007.5 used the Classic label to distinguish between the first and second generations.
