Civilization VI is a popular turn-based strategy game focused on building a civilization from humble beginnings into a dominant power. You guide your people as they expand, develop, and grow smarter over time. Each civilization brings its own flavor with exclusive abilities, special improvements, and distinctive leaders.

On every turn, you can make meaningful choices—constructing facilities, negotiating with other leaders, training military units, and scouting the world. The game’s responsive AI (and human opponents, if you play multiplayer) adapts to your actions, which keeps battles and diplomacy exciting.

As you progress, you’ll face a variety of random events. To reach the next era, you must keep advancing through the technology tree, unlocking new benefits and strengthening your position. Civilization VI also continues to receive updates, including seasonal events and new expansion packs designed to keep the experience fresh.

How Gameplay Works

Civilization VI is a turn-based 4X strategy title where one or more players compete against computer-controlled civilizations to grow their society across multiple historical periods. Your goal is to develop from a small tribe into a force capable of shaping the entire world.

This is done by pursuing one of the game’s victory conditions, which are grounded in the classic 4X pillars: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.

You’ll manage a civilization of your choice, advancing technology, culture, and government structures from ancient eras toward the near future. Found and grow cities by building useful improvements such as mines, farms, and more, while also exploring a world map generated for each game. Along the way, you’ll meet rival civilizations and encounter barbarians.

You can choose diplomacy—trade, build peaceful relationships, and coordinate with others—or shift toward conflict by using your military.

Civilizations, Leaders, and Unique Bonuses

Like earlier Civilization games, every civilization includes:

  • A unique ability
  • At least one unique unit (often tied closely to the civilization’s historical identity, though not always to the leader)
  • Unique infrastructure such as an improvement, building, or district

Leaders also provide their own distinct abilities, which can sometimes add another unique unit into the mix.

A key difference from Civilization V is that both leaders and civilizations grant benefits, making each combination feel more personal and strategically meaningful.

City Unstacking and District Placement

Civilization VI

Civilization VI continues using the hex-based grid introduced in Civilization V. A major new concept is city unstacking. In this system, some city improvements must be placed within the city’s workable hex area, but not on the city center tile itself.

Instead of treating everything as one single location, you must assign particular hexes as districts. Each district has placement limitations, but it also provides bonuses that affect what you build nearby.

For instance:

  • Encampment district: focuses on training military units and enables additional buildings that grant production and experience bonuses to those units. Encampments can’t be placed adjacent to the main city center.
  • Terrain-based district bonuses: some districts perform best when positioned on specific terrain. Campuses, for example, gain strong advantages when placed next to mountain or rainforest hexes, reflecting the in-world scientific gains from studying biodiverse regions.
  • Civilization VI

You can also attack specific districts of a city instead of going straight for the city center. Damaging key districts can disrupt city operations, and defensive planning changes as well. For example, if a city has an encampment, attackers approaching may face ranged attacks not only from the city center but also from the encampment—meaning you may need to capture or neutralize the district before the city center becomes vulnerable.

Domination Victory

Civilization VI

Win by conquering the capital cities of every other civilization in the match.

Science Victory

Win by sending a satellite into orbit, landing a human on the Moon, and ultimately establishing a Mars colony to prove your civilization’s scientific leadership.

Cultural Victory

Win by attracting more tourists to your civilization than any other civilization can attract from its own domestic population.

Religious Victory

Win by making your religion the dominant one across the world—meaning your religion must become the majority in every civilization’s cities.

Diplomatic Victory

Win by collecting enough Diplomatic Victory Points through alliances, World Congress voting outcomes, and other diplomatic actions.

Build and Design Your Empire

You begin with a small city that has limited resources and development. From there, it’s on you to shape the landscape into something that supports your long-term plans. You can essentially map out where you want key elements such as houses, bridges, watchtowers, rivers, forests, and farms, building toward a strategy that fits your civilization’s goals.
