Save Compatibility Issues & Workarounds

This week, there were at least two reports that older save files caused an error while loading. After testing older saves, it turned out that some wouldn’t load correctly.

One interesting detail: some saves made more than a year ago loaded with problems, while some made around two months ago did not—so the cause wasn’t purely based on time.

Cause 1: Incorrect Enum Definition

In Orange Smash, the dialogue panel can sometimes move to the top or side during more intense scenes. This behavior is handled using a Python Enum structure.

The issue came from how the Enum values were written. In many languages, trailing commas are valid, but in Python they implicitly change a number (like 5) into a tuple (like (5,)). When that happened to an Enum entry, loading older saves could crash.

The fix was to use Enum’s _missing_ function so the game could recognize and handle both old and new value formats. That resolved the problem for that cause.

Cause 2: Broken .rpyc Files

Orange Smash uses Ren’Py (a visual novel engine). In Ren’Py, changing or moving parts of the code can sometimes break save compatibility.

Even after careful investigation between v0.5 and v0.6, the exact changes responsible weren’t fully pinpointed. After researching Ren’Py’s behavior in more depth, the developer found guidance explaining how Ren’Py .rpyc files work and what can trigger incompatibility.

Using that information, they restored some compatibility by attempting to repair behavior so that—at least in testing—older v0.5 saves that previously crashed could load again.

However, some v0.6 saves still had issues. The developer explained that there were likely too many changes in v0.6 to fully fix every incompatibility case.

Workaround: “Jump To…” Chapter Select

To handle remaining compatibility problems, a practical workaround was added.

In the start menu, when you choose Continue, you can now use a “Jump To…” option on the left. This takes you to a chapter-style selection screen that lets you jump directly to certain key scenes.
