Why is my refund amount different from what I expected?
When the merchant processes your refund, you’ll receive an email from us with a full breakdown. That message includes the refund amount and any adjustments made to your payments as a result. The refund is applied starting with your final payment and then works backward through earlier installments.
If you think the refund wasn’t applied correctly, first confirm that the amount listed in your Afterpay refund email matches the amount shown in the merchant’s refund confirmation email.
- If the amounts match: We recommend contacting the merchant, as we’ve correctly applied the refund amount they processed.
- If the amounts don’t match: Contact us so we can investigate. Please include a screenshot of the email from the merchant.


If there were still payments remaining for the order, your future payments may have been adjusted or canceled.
Example: Sam’s order total was $500.40. She returned an item valued at $143.10. At the time the refund was processed, Sam still had two payments left on the order. Her final payment was cancelled, and the third installment was adjusted accordingly.
