Back Wars Introduction

Back Wars Back Wars is a fast-paced action-adventure where you command troops, explore regions, and use map strategy to expand territory. Enjoy cinematic battles, switch characters, and conquer the chaotic battlefield.

Back Wars

Back Wars is a lively action-adventure casual game where you command a trained army as it marches backward through time—straight into the age of primitive tribes. The goal is simple: take control of the battlefield, overpower your opponents, and ultimately rule the world.

Enjoy bright 2D cartoon-style visuals and a chaotic, action-packed atmosphere. You can manage your forces in flexible ways—either directing your troops as a group or taking control of individual soldiers to complete objectives. The map design is especially important: it rewards strategy as you expand your territory, and it delivers intense duels across a messy, hard-to-read battlefield.

Key Highlights

Created by MDickie, this action title feels familiar to fans of the developer’s other games, but it brings its own twist. In Back Wars, an army has traveled through time to conquer the world—only to run into resistance it didn’t expect.

Controls work the same way as other MDickie games:

  • Left side of the screen: directional controls
  • Right side of the screen: action buttons

As usual, you can attack, grab, pick up items, use weapons, and more.

One of the most fun parts is that each map region supports different characters. Be sure to travel across the whole map to find them all. To swap between the characters you have available, use the button in the top-left corner.

Amazing Features

  • Large-Scale Battles: Watch hundreds of units collide at once for a cinematic, chaotic battlefield feel.
  • Diverse Cultures and Time Periods: Pick from many factions, including tribal fighters, medieval knights, modern soldiers, and futuristic cyborgs.
  • Back Wars

  • Strategic World Map: Expand and manage your territory globally—decide where to strengthen defenses and where to strike next.
  • Back Wars

  • Interactive Combat: Control any unit on the battlefield. Switch soldiers quickly and use skills to swing the outcome.
  • Dynamic Conquest: Your decisions matter—wins and losses change how the world map progresses, so each run feels different.
  • Customizable Armies: Upgrade troops and adjust your tactics to handle threats from different eras.

Performance & Upgrades

Most of the content is available for free. If you upgrade, you can take more control over your experience—choose which side to join and set the starting size of your territory.

You can also reduce stress with fantasy battles between any two cultures. Soldier count isn’t capped by the game itself—as long as your device can handle it.

In addition, you can edit every character. However, the game can use up to 1000 characters, and they update regularly.

Controls (Classic & Dual-Wield)

Depending on the characters you use, the game provides two input styles:

  • Classic one-handed mode
  • Back Wars

  • Dual-wielding mode, where each hand can be controlled separately

If you’re new to these controls (or returning and need a refresher), you can pause anytime by using the timeline, then open the Controls Guide. You can also find scrolls or books in the game that offer additional tips.

Map & Campaign Gameplay

The main mode is Campaign. To progress, you expand your territory by moving troops from one region to an adjacent region.

You can either:

  • Consolidate your existing territories
  • Back Wars

  • Seize enemy territories

Important gameplay rule: only 50% of the troops in each territory can move. That means invasions are harder than defending.

Player Feedback

  • “Beautiful game, 10/10.” One reviewer highlights how it delivers an endgame and keeps evolving beyond the feeling of “I’m done.” They also mention that starting in the past is best because you must evolve and steal weapons, while animals can be annoying (but can be dealt with).
  • Upgrade impact noted. Another comment says the upgrade connects to the story, but without it the game becomes quite difficult. They also like switching characters as a strategy mechanic.
  • Match limitations. A player points out that custom matches aren’t possible without purchasing the upgrade. They also mention the limited era choices (Past and Present) and that map changes are a major downside.
  • Short chaotic battles. One user describes the game as fun and energetic, similar to the best content from earlier 2D MDickie titles—though they complain there’s too much dialogue mid-fight and that the ending feels underwhelming (no credits/dialogue).
