Subnautica: Below Zero Introduction

Subnautica: Below Zero Dive into Subnautica: Below Zero on Planet 4546B, where icy biomes, alien ruins, and dangerous creatures challenge your survival. Gather resources, craft equipment, build vehicles, and uncover the truth about your sister.

Subnautica: Below Zero

Subnautica: Below Zero is an open-world survival game set on an ocean planet with a deep-freeze twist. You take on the role of a lone survivor who must brave freezing seas and unfamiliar regions to find her sister. With new icy biomes, relentless hazards, and a constant need to manage resources, your journey revolves around collecting materials, crafting protective cold-weather gear, building tools and equipment, and even working around icy wildlife to move your vehicles.

As you explore, you’ll uncover alien ruins, face dangerous creatures, and deal with traps. The game encourages you to choose where to go and how to investigate, using your instincts to reveal hidden rewards—while gradually learning what caused the planet to freeze and what ultimately happened to your sister.

Key Features

Return to Planet 4546B

Head into a brand-new sub-zero expedition across the arctic areas of Planet 4546B. With little more than survival gear and your own instincts, you press onward to discover what happened to your sister.

Uncover the truth

Alterra left behind an unfinished situation after a strange incident. Abandoned research outposts are scattered throughout the region, and the question becomes: what happened to the staff who lived and worked there?

Logs, scattered items, and databanks found among the wreckage offer clues to a bigger story. Since supplies are scarce, you’ll need to improvise and manage your survival carefully.

Explore uncharted biomes

  • Swim beneath the blue-lit, arched stretches of Twisty Bridges.
  • Discover the shimmering, massive crystals in Crystal Caverns.
  • Climb snow-covered heights and push into the icy tunnels of Glacial Basin.
  • Navigate between erupting Thermal Vents to uncover old alien relics.

Below Zero introduces fresh environments designed for survival, observation, and exploration.

Build habitats and vehicles

Survive the extreme weather by setting up large habitats, scavenging for resources, and crafting the gear you need. Then travel in custom ways—race across snowy terrain on the Snowfox hoverbike, or explore risky regions in your modular Seatruck.

Study alien lifeforms

Not everything you find is friendly—and something new seems to be hiding around every corner. Test your courage and your instincts by exploring the giant Titan Holefish, encountering the eerie Shadow Leviathan, and meeting the adorable Pengwings.

Stay alert: unfamiliar creatures can be unpredictable.

What Makes It Stand Out

Unique icy environment

Subnautica: Below Zero

The biggest difference from the original game is the setting: an intensely cold landscape filled with ice floes, towering icebergs, and frozen caves. This isn’t just a visual change—temperature becomes a direct part of survival.

Whereas the first Subnautica emphasized oxygen and avoiding threats, Below Zero adds the pressure of hypothermia. Whenever you surface or travel on land, you must monitor your body temperature. Even a short period of neglect can leave your character shivering and losing blood.

New biomes such as Deep Arctic, Crystal Caves, and Glacial Basin bring fresh dangers—ranging from total darkness to tight ice gaps that appear when you least expect them.

A more personal story focus

Compared to the original, Subnautica: Below Zero leans harder into story. You play as Robin Ayou, who comes to 4546B for a specific reason: finding her sister, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Rather than pushing you to build a resource base as your main goal, each step is driven by Robin’s personal drive—questioning the why and the how. Hidden labs, Architect ruins, outdated equipment, and audio recordings gradually piece together the past, including older technology and the role of the Kara bacteria, plus humanity’s involvement.

The narrative doesn’t simply hand you answers—it keeps raising new questions to maintain your curiosity. Robin’s personality stays consistent, and her interactions with the AI Architect add extra layers to the journey.

More creatures to meet

The world is both gorgeous and alive with variety. Many animals have their own recognizable behaviors, and you’ll need to watch carefully and adapt. Some species are calm—often moving in groups and creating brief moments of peace—until you get deeper into the environment.

Other creatures can strike without warning. Examples include the Shadow Leviathan, Chelicerate, and Ice Worm, which can attack in surprising ways that may leave you reeling for a few seconds.

Gameplay Strategies

Managing calories

If your PDA suggests you need more calories, you can eat raw fish you find nearby. Common options include:

  • Bladderfish
  • Subnautica: Below Zero

  • Arctic Peeper
  • Hoopfish

Be aware: eating raw fish can dehydrate you. To reduce this, try cooking the fish in your Fabricator, or choose alternatives such as edible fruit and fungi—like Fevered Peppers (found in the Glacial Bay biome) or the underwater Bull Eye Shroom (near your Drop Pod).

Managing fluids

If your PDA indicates you need more fluids, you can use a Bladderfish to produce water at your Fabricator. You can also rely on Fevered Peppers or other drinkable food sources found in the environment.
