You’ll make decisions that steer their futures, watch events unfold, and help shape a family of your own. Throughout the game you’ll face many puzzles, with challenges ranging from straightforward to tricky. To progress, stay patient, remain calm, and use objects around you in smart, creative ways. As the adventure continues, your influence shows up through achievements, making it easier to see how your actions affected your journey.
Features

Atmospheric Puzzle Adventure
Rusty Lake: Roots blends puzzle-solving with storytelling in a way that stands out within the adventure genre. Expect stylized hand-drawn visuals and an unsettling, mysterious atmosphere. As part of the Rusty Lake series, it delivers a symbol-filled narrative about a family’s fate across generations—packed with dark humor, surreal moments, and clues that feel intentionally cryptic.

Intriguing Story Across Generations
The heart of the game follows James Vanderboom. His choices—and those made by his descendants—branch into an expanding family tree. Each chapter plays like a short vignette, introducing new relatives and situations, often with eerie undertones. Because the progression is non-linear, you can explore in different orders, so each playthrough can feel fresh and unpredictable.
Classic Point-and-Click Gameplay
Rusty Lake: Roots uses user-friendly point-and-click controls inspired by early 90s adventure games. It’s welcoming for newcomers while still satisfying for experienced players. Most challenges are environment-based puzzles: you’ll search for hidden items, interpret clues, and interact with the strange world around you to move the story forward. Every puzzle ties back to the larger narrative, giving your actions meaning beyond simply “solving the level.”
Immersive Art and Sound

Hand-crafted visuals create a mysterious and slightly disturbing mood that fits the surreal storytelling perfectly. The sound design stays subtle—paired with a minimalist soundtrack—to keep tension and curiosity high as the mystery deepens.
Highlights
Characters Show Up Unexpectedly
In Rusty Lake: Roots, you’re never really dealing with only one storyline at a time. As the family tree branches, you meet new faces and uncover hidden situations. For example, when the tree splits, you may encounter a girl named Mary, and a curious love story begins. Elsewhere, a long-dead body inside an old clock can be examined to help you obtain the heart.

You’ll also come across scenes like a boy and a girl trying to catch a butterfly on a tree branch, which can point you toward a new direction. A crow-headed humanoid figure may appear behind a fence, seemingly trying to communicate with the people inside the garden. Even the image of the crow’s eyes becomes something you’re meant to look for—part of what you’ll eventually hang on the family tree.
The Story World Keeps Changing
The adventure isn’t limited to what happens outside the garden. As you work through events, new odd phenomena can appear inside the house as well. The journey is framed like a time-stamped adventure and begins in the spring of 1860. As development evaluates key milestones for you to discover, those changes help generate new scenes with bigger twists in the story.
More puzzles mean more details to find, and you’ll collect pictures along the way—usually as quickly as you can, as they become part of how the story is pieced together.
Puzzle-Solving Tools and Key Items
Strange events will push you to decode what’s happening and use essential tools to keep moving. For instance, holding a letter can help you unlock the Suitcase. Inside is a small box containing a magical seed—something you’ll plant in the ground.
The bone near the box matters too, helping a dog dig and creating an effective hole for planting. You can also find a can quickly, then tie it to a rope to draw water. The water amount is just enough to create the right conditions for the tree to grow, and you’ll need to remember to attach your photo.

As you gather items like diamonds, axes, matchboxes, and keys, you’ll uncover more truths that build the family tree and connect back to the game’s lore.
Player Comments
“I’ve become a diehard fan of Rusty Lake over the past two weeks. I’ve played almost every game they’ve made (I’m about to start Paradise), and so far this one is my favorite. It was genuinely hard to stop playing—there were times I nearly missed church because I just wanted to keep going. The story is really interesting, and you never fully know where it’s going to lead. I even feel like I need a ten-page paper to analyze the meaning behind all of the lore at this point. The mini-games are challenging but also entertaining. I only needed help with two puzzles, though I probably could’ve solved them without a walkthrough. Just be warned: after you finish, you might go through withdrawal. It’s honestly depressing to realize you’ve run out of content.”
