Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action adventure where you play as an undercover police officer trying to infiltrate a ruthless criminal syndicate. Your job is to earn their confidence, climb through the ranks, and keep your cover intact while the violence escalates around you. As the story unfolds, you’ll be pulled between police duty and the criminal underworld—so the real question is: who do you stay loyal to?

Beyond its story and missions, the game lets you drive through city streets and even marine environments. Expect intense shootouts, close-quarters fights, and a high-energy atmosphere throughout.

Gameplay

You take on the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop tasked with dismantling multiple branches of the infamous Triad. You begin as an overlooked officer with limited prospects, but your big opportunity comes when a senior figure orders you to remove your badge and operate as a gang member.

As you progress, you follow a layered narrative packed with shifting alliances, new faces, and multiple factions. By the time you reach the conclusion of the main story, you uncover a larger conspiracy spreading across Hong Kong.

The world is a rebuilt, expansive take on Hong Kong, packed with places to visit, shops to enter, purchases to make, and countless citizens to interact with. You can also buy apartments around the city and decorate them using items you collect along the way.

Main Triad Missions

During the primary campaign, Triad members assign you varied tasks. Most missions don’t feel repetitive—examples include kidnapping rival gang members, eliminating problematic officials, and pulling off heists. Each mission affects your standings: your score can go up or down based on your actions.

If you hurt civilians or commit crimes, you’ll gain Triad points while losing police officer points.

Cop Missions (Side-Quest Style)

To build your police officer points, you’ll need to complete cop missions. These function like side quests that increase your reputation, while also rewarding you with money and items.

Many of these missions are action-heavy but can feel repetitive over time. You’re typically asked to arrest specific people or gather evidence for cases against criminals. Still, there are also more entertaining objectives—such as saving hostages and stopping terrorists.

Face Points and Skill Expansion

The game also includes side quests that earn you face points. These points let you upgrade a separate skill tree. You gain face points by completing tasks for various citizens across Hong Kong.

These side activities are diverse, ranging from street races to helping film action movies for friends. With face points, you can earn more money and unlock new vehicles and other items.

Triad Points and Combat Upgrades

Triad points are primarily used to upgrade your melee combat skill tree. This is especially important because many main-story missions don’t revolve around weapons as much as close-quarters fighting.

As your police points grow, you unlock logistics skills that make missions easier—such as quickly stealing vehicles or taking weapons from the trunks of police cars. While you can beat the game focusing on just one skill tree, using all three point types typically makes missions significantly more manageable.
