Rules of Hearts - Online Hearts Game

These rules follow the standard version commonly used for Hearts, with a few key details highlighted below.

• Goal: finish with the fewest penalty points.
• Scoring:
  • Each heart card counts as 1 penalty point.
  • The Queen of Spades counts as 13 penalty points.

Card Passing (at the start of each round)

At the beginning of the game, you choose 3 cards to pass to an opponent. In general, many players pass their three worst cards to get rid of them. The direction changes by round:

• Game 1: pass to the player on your left
• Game 2: pass to the player on your right
• Game 3: pass across the table
• Game 4: no passing

How a Trick Works

• Each turn begins with a leading player who plays one card.
• The suit of the leading card becomes the required suit for that trick.
• Other players must follow suit if they can.
  • If they have a matching suit card, they must play it.
  • If they don’t, they may play another card.
• After all four cards are played, the trick is taken by the player who played the highest card in the original suit.
• The player who wins the trick also starts the next turn.
• Penalty collection: if a trick contains hearts or the Queen of Spades, those penalty cards are added to the players’ running total.
  • So your strategy is often to avoid taking tricks that include hearts or the Queen of Spades.

First Lead and Heart-Breaking Rules

• The player holding the Two of Clubs leads in the first hand, and they must lead that card.



• You cannot lead a trick with hearts until hearts has been broken (meaning a heart has been played on a different suit).
• Therefore, if you are to lead and no heart has been played yet, you must not select a heart as your first card.
• In some variants, the Queen of Spades is restricted until hearts is broken, but in this version you can always play the Queen of Spades, and it does not break hearts.

Special Restriction: Round One

In the very first round, you may never play a heart or the Queen of Spades—even if you have no playable card in the lead suit.

End of Game

• When all cards are played, penalty points are counted for that hand.
• If one or more players reach 100+ points, the match ends and the player with the lowest points wins.
• If points exceed 100 and there is a tie for the lowest score (two or more players tied), play continues until there is only one winner.

Shooting the Moon!

Normally, taking penalty cards is bad—but there’s a high-risk twist. If a player manages to collect all penalty cards (that is, 13 hearts plus the Queen of Spades), they score 0 points, and the other three players each receive 26 points. This is called Shooting the Moon. It can swing the game instantly, but it’s risky—if another player takes even one heart, you can end up with a large score.
