Jamie Last (a pseudonym) has been enjoying the summer holidays more than ever. For an eight-year-old, a beach-close home means vacation feels endless—until one blazing evening when Jamie is walking home and a stranger approaches.

The man asks for a favor and offers payment. He hopes Jamie will befriend his only son. The stranger is Mr. Holden, Jamie’s new neighbor, and his son is Kov—a name as unusual as the boy himself.
