dYdX dYdX powers cross-margined perpetual trading via a StarkWare Layer 2 protocol with zkSTARK proofs, aiming for lower gas and trading fees while keeping settlement non-custodial.

To expand trading at scale, dYdX and StarkWare created a Layer 2 solution for cross-margined perpetual futures. It combines StarkWare’s StarkEx scalability engine with dYdX perpetual smart contracts, so traders can benefit from much lower gas usage. In practice, this also supports reduced trading fees and smaller minimum order sizes.

StarkWare’s zkSTARKs uses a form of ZK-Rollup technology to increase dYdX’s settlement throughput, while still relying on the security of the underlying Ethereum blockchain.

The dYdX integration pairs STARK proofs for data integrity with on-chain data availability, helping maintain a non-custodial model. Settlements occur on Layer 2, which periodically posts zero-knowledge proofs to an Ethereum smart contract to confirm that Layer 2 state changes are valid.
