Veer Narmad South Gujarat University is a semi-urban institution located at the Textile and Diamond Hub of India, Surat, with a wide campus spread across 210 acres.

Accreditation and Establishment

• In 2017, it was re-accredited with an ‘A’ grade and scored 3.02 CGPA by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council.



• In 2016, under Academic and Administrative Audit (AAA), it received ‘B++’ grade with 2.90 CGPA from the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat, Education Department, Government of Gujarat.
• The university was initially established under the South Gujarat University Act, 1965, passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly.
• It started functioning from the academic year 1966 and was officially incorporated as a university on 23 May 1967.



• It was recognized by the University Grants Commission in 1968.
• In 2004, it was renamed Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in honor of the Gujarati poet Narmad (Narmadshankar Lalshankar Dave).

Jurisdiction and Academic Scope

The university’s mandate is to support the developmental needs of seven districts and two Union Territories in the region. Its jurisdiction covers the seven districts of Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Narmada, Dangs, Bharuch, and Tapi, along with the Union Territory of Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

On campus, the university has 25 Postgraduate Departments/Institutes offering 95 programmes with multiple specializations, including 19 M.Phil and 19 Ph.D programmes.

The university is affiliated with 34 Government, 59 Grant-in-aid, and 190 Self-financed Colleges, along with 104 Postgraduate Teaching Centres (subject-wise) attached to these affiliated colleges.

Program offerings include 36 Post Graduate, 4 Graduate, 3 Integrated, 9 PG Diploma, and 05 Certificate programmes, including self-financed options with a semester credit-based system at the university campus. In its Postgraduate Departments, more than 4000 students study on campus.

The university has twelve faculties: Arts, Commerce, Science, Education, Management Studies, Rural Studies, Engineering and Technology, Medicine, Law, Computer Science, Homoeopathic, and Architecture.
