Subnautica Introduction
Subnautica Crash-landed on an ocean planet, you must explore deep biomes with a submarine, craft tools, gather water and food, and build underwater bases to uncover why you’re stranded.
Subnautica
Step into Subnautica, an expansive and mysterious ocean world. After a sudden crash-landing on an alien planet covered in deep water, you’ll need to navigate using a submarine to explore different underwater regions, meet strange marine life, and uncover what caused your arrival.
Survival is a core part of the journey: you must gather food and clean water to stay alive longer, build an underwater base, collect materials for crafting tools and weapons, and deal with dangerous predators lurking in the depths. Ready to start your deep-sea exploration?

Why Players Love Subnautica
Explore a Huge, Varied Ocean
You’ll swim through striking biomes, including towering kelp forests, bright coral reefs, volcanic vents, and complex cave networks. Each area brings new creatures and hidden secrets, especially as the environment shifts with day-night cycles and changing underwater conditions.

Gather, Scavenge, and Craft
Collect resources from the seafloor to craft tools, vehicles, and underwater bases. The farther you go, the more valuable materials you’ll find—unlocking advanced technology and helping you survive deeper, more dangerous waters.
Uncover the Planet’s Story
Follow clues about the alien world’s past and why your ship crashed. Search abandoned sites and unusual events to piece together what’s happening in this strange ocean and determine how to escape.

Choose the Gameplay Style You Want
- Survival Mode: the original challenge.
- Freedom Mode: explore without hunger or thirst pressure.
- Creative Mode: unlimited resources and full building freedom.
This flexibility lets you shape the experience around how you like to play.
Gameplay Strategies
Choose Your Base Location Carefully
Base-building is one of the most important systems in Subnautica. Bases act like safe recovery points amid constant underwater risk—similar to how bonfires work in Dark Souls.
That said, you must plan your placement wisely. Building too close to dangerous leviathans can make your base effectively unreachable. Before committing to a spot, spend time scouting the surrounding area. Also remember: bases take time to construct, so most players only build a couple of bases during a playthrough—making location decisions even more important.
Avoid the World Edge
Unlike many modern open-world games, Subnautica doesn’t give you a traditional map. The game is designed to reinforce the idea that you’re genuinely stranded and don’t fully understand the planet.
If you reach the boundary, you’ll see a message: “Warning. Entering ecological dead zone. The prospect for survival is fast approaching zero.” In real life, that would mean turning back immediately—and in this game, it’s best to do the same.

Instead of finding a useful destination, the World Edge mostly leads to a dark, hostile area filled with constantly respawning Ghost Leviathans. In practice, it functions like an invisible “hard barrier” meant to keep you within the playable regions.
Stop Hunger and Hydration From Dropping
If you’re new to Subnautica, this may sound obvious—but the game’s meters constantly drain. If either hunger or hydration runs out, you’ll die.
After you set up a base, keep a chair nearby for when you use the PDA. Sitting to read and manage tasks pauses the depletion, giving you a safer window to plan your next steps.
