Who Is St. Jude?

Who is this St. Jude who inspires so much confidence and devotion—so many people seeking his help turn to him today?

St. Jude is one of the Twelve Apostles and the brother of James the Less. In many ways, he remains a somewhat mysterious figure. He appears in the Gospel accounts like a quiet presence, almost as though he intentionally kept his own identity in the background in order to point attention toward Christ instead.

That sense of obscurity is one reason why he was unknown and largely forgotten for many centuries.

Tradition and what we can piece together

Since the time of Jesus’ life and the Apostles, a body of tradition and legend has grown around St. Jude. Scholars have been able to assemble different fragments of information to form at least a general, understandable portrait of this important saint.

This section isn’t meant to provide a perfectly precise, academic history of St. Jude. Instead, it aims to offer a devotional resource to guide and instruct the reader.

St. Jude in the Gospels

Saint Jude Thaddeus

In the Gospels, St. Jude is connected with St. James the Less as “a brother of the Lord.” In Jewish usage, that wording can refer to a very close relative—or a cousin.

When people in Nazareth saw the wisdom and miraculous power connected with Jesus, they questioned one another, saying: “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, a brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon?” (Mark 6:3, Matt. 13:35). This suggests that “Judas” or “Jude” was known in and around Nazareth.

In the Gospel lists of the Twelve Apostles, Jude appears alongside James. For example, Mark 3:18 and Matthew 10:3 mention James (son of Alphaeus) together with Jude.

The Epistle commonly attributed to St. Jude also describes him as “a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James” (Jude 1:1). This may be why Luke refers to him as “Judas of James,” using “Judas” in a way that effectively means Jude—the brother (not son) of James, who was widely known and respected in the Jerusalem church (Luke 6:16, Acts 1:13).

Mary and the family connections

Another passage indicates that the mother of James and Jude was named Mary. She had followed Jesus during his travels through Galilee and later witnessed the crucifixion and death of the Savior (Mark 15:40, Matt. 17:56).

So Mary—the mother of James and Jude—was not only related to the Lord, but also remained his faithful follower even at the moment of death on the cross.

In John’s Gospel, we also find a Mary (the wife of Clopas) standing with the sorrowful mother at the foot of the cross (John 19:25). Some attempts to harmonize the different Gospel accounts have suggested that Mary of Clopas might be the same person as the mother of James and Joses—and therefore Jude.

However, there is a key counterpoint: the father of James and Jude is always named Alphaeus, and the Gospels do not provide evidence that he had two different names. Also, “Mary” was a very common name, and the lists of women who witnessed the Passion of the Lord differ from one Gospel tradition to another.

In any case, we do know that Mary, the mother of James and Jude, was present at the Passion and death of the Lord. In the Gospel of John, not only Mary the Mother of Jesus but also the other women accompanying her are presented as examples of faithful believers.

User Reviews of Saint Jude Thaddeus

  • A reviewer notes that the computer voice mispronounces words and doesn’t pause in appropriate places. They say the voice reads too quickly and that the text isn’t formatted to support proper pacing and responses. They suggest that someone should record the prayers properly instead of using a computer voice.
  • Another user says: “Thank you for introducing me to this prayer and making it so easily accessible. It's a powerful prayer indeed and can feel the peace it brings to my soul after each novena. May God hear and answer our petitions through the intercession of St. Jude through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
  • A further review mentions that, besides their understanding that St. Jude was literally Jesus’ brother and was tasked with family finances when Jesus began his mission, they feel the prayer app is essential to their spiritual healing and growth. They add that they are financially impoverished but feel richer in spirit because of it, and they express gratitude to the app’s author.
