Microsoft Authenticator Mobile Introduction
Microsoft Authenticator Mobile Microsoft Authenticator is the official 2FA tool from Microsoft, helping you sign in securely with phone approvals, fingerprint/Face ID/PIN, and optional device registration for safer access.
Microsoft Authenticator Mobile
Microsoft Authenticator is Microsoft’s official two-step verification (2FA) app used to protect thousands of websites and online services. With 2FA (also called TFA), you can sign in without relying on memorizing passwords. Instead of just entering a password, you confirm your sign-in using your phone—so even if someone learns your password, they still can’t access your account without your device.
To use it, keep your Android device close by and approve sign-in requests securely.
Key Features
- Two-step verification: Adds an extra security step beyond your password, helping prevent account access even if credentials are stolen.
- Phone sign-in: Lets you access your personal Microsoft account using your phone for fast, convenient logins.
- Device registration: Some organizations require registering your device before you can access certain files or apps. Authenticator makes this setup easier to help you access accounts securely.
What You Can Do
Start Using Passwordless

Sign in to your Microsoft account without a password. Enter your username, then approve the notification sent to your phone. Your fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN acts as a second factor to complete the two-step verification.
After you confirm sign-in with 2FA, you’ll be able to access your Microsoft products and services such as Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.
Set Up Password Autofill
Microsoft Authenticator can also autofill passwords for you. Open the Passwords tab inside the Authenticator app and sign in with your personal Microsoft account to begin syncing. This includes passwords stored in Microsoft Edge.
Turn on Microsoft Authenticator as your default autofill provider to have it fill in passwords across mobile apps and sites you use. Password access inside the app is protected using multi-factor authentication. To autofill on your mobile, you’ll need to verify your identity with your fingerprint, Face ID, or PIN.
You can also bring passwords in from Google Chrome and other password managers.
Personal, Work, or School Accounts
Sometimes your employer or school may ask you to install Microsoft Authenticator to access certain files, emails, or applications. In that case, you’ll register your device through the app and add your work or school account.
Microsoft Authenticator supports certificate-based authentication by creating a certificate on your device. This signals to your organization that the sign-in request is coming from a trusted device—making it easier to access additional Microsoft apps and services without repeatedly signing in.

Because Authenticator supports single sign-on, once you confirm your identity on your device, you typically won’t need to sign in again for other Microsoft apps.

Access Permissions
Microsoft Authenticator may include the following optional access permissions. You will be asked for your consent before any optional permissions are enabled. If you choose not to allow them, you can still use Authenticator for other services that don’t require those permissions.
