From the child’s perspective, you’ll explore the eerie rooms of the house, using everyday objects around you to avoid frightening creatures. To survive the night, you’ll also need to solve puzzles and pay close attention to small environmental details that may hint at what to do next.

Story (Plot Summary)

The adventure takes place in the 1990s. A toddler is celebrating their second birthday at home with their mother. The celebration is interrupted when someone knocks at the front door—though the visitor is hidden from you. The story implies this person is the toddler’s father, who is divorced from the mother. Their conversation is muffled, and the mother keeps parts of it from the child by speaking louder and refusing the request to see them. Her anger overwhelms the toddler, shown through a frightened, distorted perspective.

Quickly, the mother returns with a present, but she never says who it’s from. Instead, she carries the toddler upstairs to a bedroom filled with bright, warm colors and sunlight streaming in. She opens the gift with a clearly displeased expression and shuts it again. Before the toddler can receive it, the phone rings, and the mother leaves the child alone in the room.

Inside the present is a sentient teddy bear. It climbs out of the box and hides in the chest until you find it. The bear introduces himself as Teddy, and he’s kind, playful, and curious. After a few minutes of playing together with items like a music box, a pink stuffed elephant, a storybook, and a toy train, you enter a closet that turns out to be a huge, dark space packed with long, dark coats.

Teddy explains that if the toddler feels scared in the dark, they can hug him for comfort. When the toddler holds Teddy, he lights the way like a flashlight. The small moment of safety ends when the mother finds them, telling the toddler—gently but with a threatening edge—to stop hiding and put them to bed.

Later that night, Teddy is taken away by an unseen force. The toddler follows and discovers Teddy inside a washing machine. They unplug it and pull him out. Teddy then realizes something is wrong and insists they must find the toddler’s mother. During the search, they are confronted by a shadowy figure, and the journey eventually leads them to a slide that drops them into a small playhouse floating within a void. The door inside takes them through several strange worlds, including:

• A network of corridors made from hundreds of closets

Teddy gives the toddler a task: locate four memories they shared with their mother, and these will guide them to her. Each memory appears as an object: the mother’s necklace pendant shown at the beginning of the game, the music box she uses to put the toddler to sleep, a storybook, and the pink elephant.

While searching, the toddler is hunted by a large, feminine, troll-like monster, along with another creature with glowing white eyes that has a coat-like body similar to the ones in the toddler’s closet area earlier in the story.

After the final memory is recovered, Teddy and the toddler try to return through the slide back to the playhouse. However, the coat monster clings to Teddy, stopping the toddler from completing the last memory. The toddler’s weight causes Teddy’s arm to be ripped off as they hang over a deep abyss. The player is then forced into a dark space illuminated by rows of floodlights.

Following the mother’s voice, the toddler sees her drinking from a bottle. She then begins to transform into different monsters before vanishing. Left alone in the darkness, the toddler sees window lights ahead that guide them back to the playhouse. Using the last memory—and Teddy’s torn arm—to open the playhouse door, the toddler discovers something ahead, including cracks in a door positioned directly in front of them.
