It starts with your pathogen infecting “Patient Zero.” From there, you must bring about the end of human history by developing a deadly, global plague—adapting continuously as humanity responds with countermeasures and protective actions.

Built from the ground up for touchscreen play, Plague Inc. was developed by Ndemic Creations and redefines the strategy genre with innovative mechanics that push mobile gaming—and players—to new levels. The premise is simple: you vs. the world. Only the most resilient outbreak survives.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the developer was invited to speak at the CDC in Atlanta about the disease models used in the game, and later partnered with the World Health Organisation to create an expansion: Plague Inc.: The Cure.

Engaging Gameplay

In Plague Inc., your goal is to infect all of humanity with a fatal virus, beginning with a strain developed through experimentation on your own Patient Zero.

How you play:

• First, decide how your virus should evolve by selecting different pathogens and symptoms to influence how the infection spreads through the world.
• You’ll gain access to a large range of diseases, each offering different approaches and outcomes.
• Next, you can’t focus only on making your plague as lethal as possible—you also need it to spread effectively across all five continents.



• Your ultimate objective is to eliminate human life country by country.

Visually, the game isn’t trying to be flashy, since much of the experience runs through clean menus and straightforward interfaces. Still, the design is tidy and navigating between screens feels smooth.

It’s an entertaining game that may feel challenging during the first few attempts. Once you learn the system, it becomes highly addictive and can easily pull you in for hours.

• I used to play this on PC, and it’s come a long way—it’s a great time-killer. There are hundreds of scenarios, around 10 different pathogen types, and a new “Cure the World” mode where you cure instead of spread. With so many different ways to play, it feels like it could take thousands of hours. In-app purchases are also very affordable, and you can enjoy the game without spending anything.
• So amazing! The music is great too. I love how the game works—sometimes victory can be tricky, especially when trying to “save the world.” You can buy transmission, symptoms, and abilities. I’ve never managed the save-the-world part yet, but I still think it’s an incredible feature. I hope there’s a new update soon.
• Honestly, the game is really fun even without the premium version, and I can’t even imagine how good the full version feels. Each plague plays differently, which adds variety and keeps the gameplay from feeling bland. Different countries and in-game events also make every run come out differently. Edit: I got the full game—it's a bit pricey since you still have to unlock cheats and genes, but it’s not a deal breaker. The Cure mode is incredibly fun and unique, and for £2.99, the custom scenarios are worth it.
